Our mission is to provide a home to animals that have been adandoned or abused, to show them what it is to live in a home where they are loved.

It is very typical for Costa Ricans with lower socio-economic status to have a variety of dogs chained up around their house or next to make shift kennels. For them the dog is their alarm and security and they are determined to protect what little they do have.

They are very used to well meaning foreigners who come here trying to buy their dogs from them and if they do agree they simply go off and get another one. Most of the time it is not convenient for them to sell their dogs because it means getting a new dog and getting it used to them. They hardly consider the dogs as pets or part of the family. They purposefully make their dogs 'bravo' (aggressive) to ward off strangers.

Unchained Costa Rica is a project that is based on creating a middle ground for these people. Instead of removing their dogs, which leaves them vulnerable, we are committed to putting up fences to secure their property and gives their dog space to be free and to continue protecting their property making them feel twice as safe.

Not only do we put up fences, but we also aim to educate those of this socio-economic status that a dog that is 'bravo' is a dog that is unhappy and frustrated and that while it is still legal in Costa Rica, it is cruel.
